Improv for Change
We at Santa Fe Improv are passionate about being in touch with our minds, our hearts, and our creativity moment-by-moment, here and now! We are fastidious in our pursuit of the trust and courage it takes to step in front of others and devise a story as a team, through the simple but often illusive mechanism of listening, hearing, and saying “yes.” We do this because we know it makes a difference to be present for each other. Okay, and we do this because as an adult, where else are we going to be encouraged to play and have fun!
Santa Fe Improv intends to make a difference, one person at a time. In a country where individuality is prime, and worry about the past and future is on-going, we seek to bring people to a place of presence in the moment, a place where creativity is nurtured, the mind kept sharp, teamwork held as paramount, and laughter encouraged. A place of honesty. Of courage. A place of mindfulness on its feet.
To teach the process of improvisation so the skills are understood, enjoyable, and satisfying.
To provide a safe and nurturing environment for students and instructors.
To provide an opportunity to learn, laugh, and have fun in community.
To offer the opportunity to grow our ability to listen and respond spontaneously, on-the-spot, in-the-moment, and without fear.
Through 2018, Santa Fe Improv has been a school of improvisation for adults. It’s allowed us to build a focused program for a new scholastic and artistic venture. 2019 will be our year of expansion. We now have instructors in place who have a history of working with youth through a variety of performance venues. We will be applying for 501(c)3 status with the intention of developing a not-for-profit arm, specifically to serve the youth of Santa Fe and the surrounding counties.
Improv gives young people that critical opportunity to listen and to gain confidence in their unique voice, to work together, to communicate clearly, to be present in the moment for themselves and their team, to be courageous and creative and truthful.
There are only opportunities in improv, rather than mistakes. Teens will get that rare chance to trust themselves rather than fear being wrong. And they’ll be up on their feet and moving while doing so, keeping them not only creatively active, but physically active.
And on top of all of that, they will be weaving funny stories together, laughing, and having fun!
